Tom Brady watched Super Bowl in Costa Rica

Tom Brady recently said that he was watching last years Suber Bowl from Costa Rica. He and his super model wife often vacation in Costa Rica and was here to relax and rehab his injured foot. He even went so far as to admit that he watched the Super Bowl on an Illegal online sports website. Either by direct influence or coincidence, it wasn't more than a few hours and the federal government in the US shut down several of these sports sites. So, if you are in Costa Rica and you want to watch the game, you'll have to do it legally this year. No worries, however, the game is broadcast on most major Cable tv systems, satellite tv and at most sports bars. Unless you are deep in the jungle, you'll be able to root for or against Tom Brady.

Also today, Sir Elton John is in Costa Rica this weekend for a performance in San Jose's new National Stadium. Many celebrities from Tom Brady of the Super Bowl bound New England Patriots, Mel Gibson, Miley Ciryus, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are all frequent visitors to Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, Halloween means different things to different people. American and Canadian Expats with children celebrate Halloween at private, English speaking schools as well as in upscale neighborhoods. Those without children attend Halloween celebrations at bars and private parties throughout Costa Rica. Some bars that cater to expats (like the Sportsman Bar in San Jose) , advertise Halloween parties for months in advance.
Costa Ricans have different perspectives on the holiday, depending on who you talk to. Some believe that it is a holiday of devil worship and want nothing to do with it, some of the youth participate in Hell Night the night before and cause vandalism and destruction (like in the US), still others have fun participating in the parties, trick or treating and dressing up. Halloween is gaining in popularity in Costa Rica.

For my family, we have a Disney, Toy Story theme this year. 4 year old Nick is Buzz Light Year, Michele is the alien from Pizza Planet, 3 month old Colten is Woody and I am Sid, the mean kid from next door. We are joining about 100 other locals and Expats in the Jaco area at Los Suenos Resort. We rent golf carts and drive to host homes where the trick or treating takes place. After the candy bags are full, everyone meets at the HookUp Marina Restaurant for party.

In summary, living in Costa Rica doesn't mean that you have to leave your culture and holidays behind. Exat groups have parties to allow their children the same enjoyments they had as children. Costa Ricans are slowly adapting many worldwide holidays and the cultures are melting together, especially in areas with Expat influence. Halloween is no exception. The only difference for us, is that we don't have to worry about fighting icy cold weather that so often accompanies Halloween.

2012 Costa Rica Real Estate Outlook
Although the beach real estate season for Costa Rica doesn't get into full swing until mid to late December, I am going to give my analysis of the Costa Rica Real Estate Market for 2011 and present my predictions of the Costa Rica Real Estate Market for 2012.

2011 Costa Rica Real Estate remained a buyers market in most of Costa Rica. There may have been a couple of very sought after real estate developments and areas in and around popular year around areas like Escazu, but overall sales were flat in 2011. Prices at the Pacific Beaches continued to drop, although slightly in 2011 from their lows in 2010. Canadians were strong buyers in Costa Rica as evident in the number of inquiries and sales to Costa Rica Buyers VS American Buyers. Americans used to represent about 90 percent of our business and in 2011, Canadians (Snow Birds) were more than 50 percent. American Buyers are affected by the US economy, home prices in the US, the lack of available capital in the US and uncertainty with the US markets. Canadians have a good economy and are motivated to find a warm winter home.

2012 Outlook for Costa Rica Real Estate. If you are considering buying Costa Rica Real Estate, then 2012 may be your year. Prices have remained soft with plenty of supply. Infrastructure continues to improve and airlines are adding flights to both San Jose and Liberia. We are just starting to see new developments coming to market for 2012 after being almost non-existent for the past three years. With new developments there is normally new advertising and if international advertising rises, expect to see more activity in 2012. One factor in fewer real estate sales in the past three years was due to diminished budgets for international advertising by the large land developers.

Summary: In 2011 sales remained flat and buyers were looking for motivated sellers. If you are a seller and not motivated to offer a significant discount in 2012, then I recommend waiting another year to list your property. The properties that closed in 2011 mostly involved excellent deals for the buyer. I predict that prices in 2012 will remain soft, but sales will increase slightly over 2011, priming the pump for a healthy 2013 real estate market. We are expected a good rental season for 2011-2012.

Staying Connected in Costa Rica With Skype

I often get asked about the best ways to stay in touch with family when living in Costa Rica or vacationing in Costa Rica. There are many services, but one of the most popular is Skype, a a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Service). Skpye is an affordable way to stay connected. You can use Skype on a smart phone like an IPhone or through a laptop or desk top computer. All you need is a consistent internet connection (or 3G for wireless). Skype is free if you call other Skype users or you can call most American and Canadian phone numbers from Costa Rica for a few cents per minute. Even better is that with Skype, you can make video calls. If you have children and grandchildren and don't want to miss them growing up, fear not. With Skype, my son talks with his grandparents for video 2 times each week and although nothing can replace a hug, it is a close second.

Skype can be downloaded for free at www.skype.com. Note - Skype was recently purchased by Microsoft so look for new and innovative uses and applications.

Costa Rica Real Estate - Why There? Why Now?

Costa Rica Real Estate has evolved over the years just as has Costa Rica itself. Costa Rica was a 3rd world country not that long ago. It is still 3rd world in some ways, but in so many it is 2nd world and in some 1st world. Real Estate in Costa Rica was very, very cheap 15 years ago, but it was also lacking infrastructure. Costa Rica has evolved from being a very rural, off the path destination shy of amenities and hot water, to a country where you can still go off the "road less traveled," into the jungle or walk a 3 story shopping mall. Does this mean that Costa Rica is ruined? Not at the least. It means that like everything in life, Costa Rica is changing.

I am always one to believe that having options is much better than having no options. Want to stay in a jungle hideaway without running water? You can. Want to stay at the 4 Seasons and be pampered to every extreme? You can. Most of us choose to live in the middle of the extremes. We have found the Central Pacific Coast to be our middle. In the beach town of Jaco, we are within an hour of a major metropolitan city will all of the luxuries, at a 3.5 mile long beach that is surrounded by mountains, rainforest and wildlife with a downtown area of restaurants, grocery stores, sports bars and about everything you need to life a comfortable life whether you are staying for a week, a month or longer.

Is Costa Rica still cheap? Yes and No. Beach real estate in areas like Jaco, Hermosa and Herradura may cost more than what it did 15 years ago (although cheap still exist off the beaten path), but when you factor in the infrastructure and quality of life features, it packs a lot more value. Note - we couldn't afford to live on the beach in California or Florida like we can in our Jaco Condo.

Why are people coming to Costa Rica? They are coming for Costa Rica's perfect weather, its beautiful coastline and lush mountains, its friendly culture and educated people, because it is close enough to be easy to get to and far enough away that you know you are not in Kansas any longer. Costa Rica isn't as cheap as some of its politically unstable neighbors, but it certainly is still the best value and bang for your buck that I have found.

Today is the official Costa Rican Holiday celebrating the cultures of Costa Rica. For expats living in Costa Rica this means a long weekend as most schools will be closed on Friday to celebrate. Jaco Condos will be busy despite being in the middle of Costa Rica's rainy season. Below is an exerpt written by the Jaco Chamber of Commerce detailing Costa Rica's view on the importance of Christopher Columbus landing in the Americas.

OCTOBER 12th is CULTURAL DAY IN COSTA RICA: On this day, Costa Ricans commemorates the ethnic diversity of the country. The existence of North America was ignored (by Europeans) for a long time, but an expedition undertaken by Columbus allowed its "discovery", conquest and colonization by Europeans. The discovery was made on October 12, 1492. The native inhabitants of this continent were called "Indians." While they explored the coasts, rivers, and land, they realized that it was actually a New World.

October 12th celebrates the day Columbus discovered America and attributing glory to Spain. In addition, 1492 is an important date because it is the year the Spanish expelled the Arabs from their land. The arrival of the Spanish in the New World changed direction after 502 years. This occurred in 1994, when promulgating the Law on Culture Day. Thus, the traditional Columbus Day became obsolete and was replaced by a new meaning. The same is based on tolerance, recognizes the prevailing ethnic diversity in America and does not deny the heritage of Spain, the legacy of the indigenous and the African contribution, among others.

When approved Cultures Day definitely clarified that the roots of Costa Rica, like those of other Latin American countries, stems from three interacting cultures since 1492. They are the Spanish, Indian and African-Caribbean cultures. This celebration also serves to recognize that since the middle of the last century, Costa Rica has benefited from European, American, Asian, Hebrew and Arabic immigrations.

Goodbye to our friend, 'Ollie" The Capuchin Monkey

Goodbye to Ollie from Hermosa Hills!
I never in my wildest dreams ever imagined that I would get attached to a monkey - like people get attached to their pets, but I did.

We are saddend by the passing of our dear monkey friend, Ollie. Ollie was rescued as a baby by the security staff at Hermosa Hills near Jaco, who adopted and raised him as one of their own. Ollie brought joy to many visitors in Hermosa Hills including hikers, real estate clients, bikers, horse back and atv tours that stopped to have their picture taken with him. He also brought a little anquish from time to time. He was friendly, but like the fictional character, Curious George, sometimes a bit mischievous. He loved to pic the pockets (pens were his favorite item) of his admirors and tried to take jewelry off the ladies. He loved to show off by performing acrobatics among other things.

Although he was cared for by the staff, Ollie was never kept in a cage or tied up. He was free to come and go as he pleased. After almost five years of becoming almost like a mascot for the visitors and passers-by on Cero Fresco, Ollie was hit by a car and passed away.

Thanks for the fun and great memories, Ollie. You will be missed!

Costa Rica Real Estate - Whale Watching in Hermosa

While having lunch at a seaside restaurant in Hermosa (near Jaco) yesterday, we were treated to a sighting of three humpback whales. The weather was great, the waves were good, we were watching a small group of surfers, and then in the distant a large puff of mist appeared from the ocean. Sure enough, a mother humpback whale with her baby, swimming from our right to our left. We had a show for about an hour. And, almost, when the two whales were out of sight, a third whale appeared. The patrons in the restaurant were treated to a nice show that we didn't expect to see. The humpback whales are amazing. They are most often seen in the Jaco, Hermosa, Herradura areas in June, July and August, but can be seen year around. The mothers come to the warmer waters near or in large bays for shelter while they raise their babies to about two years old before journeying north to California.

If you are considering purchasing Costa Rica Real Estate in Jaco, Hermosa or elsewhere along the Pacific Coast, the humpback whales are just another fantastic thing to see in a country full of nature and beautiful sights.

How does Costa Rica Real Estate compare to Florida Real Estate?
I get a lot of calls asking me to compare Costa Rica to Florida - which is like comparing Southern California to South Carolina. Both areas have beautiful oceans and coastline, but the real estate, weather and tourism is very different. If you like Florida, now is the time to purchase Florida Real Estate, but if you are looking for something different, away from the crowds, warm weather year around and with a little adventure mixed in, then you certainly need to come down and explore all that Costa Rica has to offer. Prices for Costa Rica Real Estate are better than ever!

1. Look at this picture. Florida is flat. Costa Rica has beautiful coast line surrounded by lush mountains and nature.
2. Costa Rica's nature is jungle, palm trees and exotic animals. Florida's nature is concrete jungles, department stores and traffic (lot's of traffic).
3. Carrying costs (property taxes and insurance including hurricane insurance) for Costa Rica Real Estate is low compared to Florida Real Estate.
4. Costa Rica has NO hurricanes. Florida has hurricanes (and expensive hurricane insurance).
5. Costa Rica is an up and coming retirement and vacation destination. Florida has matured.
6. Beach front property in Costa Rica is much less expensive than beachfront property in Florida - when comparing apples to apples - even considering the real estate correction in the United States.
7. Costa Rica Real Estate can be enjoyed year around in shorts and bathing suits. Florida gets cold a few months of the year.
8. The water temperature of the Ocean in Costa Rica is always a nice 80 degrees. The water temps in Florida get cold.
9. A few tourists go to Costa Rica each year. The masses go to Florida.

Restaurants in Jaco Beach Costa RicaI woke up early today, had an early breakfast and was starving by 10am. I have to admit that my office is very close to Subway and more than a couple of days per week I get the Subway Sandwich Special with a Diet Coke or Coca Light as it is called in Costa Rica. It's a terrible habbit because we have so many really good local restaurants in Jaco that serve fresh food. Today, however, I went to a local Jaco restaurant called Mandarina for a chicken sandwhich (very good and served hot with melted cheese). On my way back to the office I stopped by the local produce stand for an ice cold, fresh pipa or coconut water (in the shell). Delicious, healthy, filling and very fresh!

Belize's Prime Minister, Dean Barrow, introduced a controversial bill in Belize's House of Representatives on Friday that critics say is a challenge to Belize's constitution. Some members are calling it a smoke and mirrors game in order to increase the Prime Ministers power and will move the now democratic government toward a dictorship.

Belize is an up and coming tourist attraction and is being marketed to Americans and Canadians for retirement.

My wife and I have lived in Costa Rica for several years now. Costa Rica is what you make of it. You can't live in the Pacific Beach areas and complain because it is warm (it is warm at the beach). Costa Rica is a small country, but the differences from one region to another are great. Petty crime does exist (like everywhere) and yes, you need to watch your things. If you want to find crime, you can. If you want to avoid it, you can. Most crime against Americans comes from Americans being too trustful of (the wrong) people too soon. You are in a new environment. You need to feel things out, before inviting total strangers to be your friends and into your home.

It is best to connect with a trusted expat from the US or Canada and meeting people through certain expat groups. Keep a low profile for the first 6 months to a year and as you learn the culture, you will know what to do and not to do. Remember, you started learning these things in the United States and Canada from birth. They are 2nd nature to you there. You are a baby in Costa Rica and although the culture is similar in many ways to the North American culture, there are differences. Once you learn these differences and slowly emerge yourself in the culture, life is very good here! Also, if you learn some Spanish, you will like it even more here.

Finally, I agree with the person who commented about renting first. That is generally a good idea. An even better idea is to go on a real estate tour. Like the US, every region is a little different. Some people love Florida, some hate it. Some like Michigan's 4 season, others never want to see winter. Jacksonville, Florida is different than Miami which is different than Tampa, etc. You get my point. I like the beach area of Jaco in the Central Pacific because it is a small city, on the coast, has good infrastructure (water, electricity, telephone, cell phone coverage, internet, etc.), grocery stores, etc., yet is surrounded by nature and a beautiful bay and a very long beach which is great to walk on at low tide. I have friends that don't care about the water and love Escazu and Santa Ana, which are nice suburbs of San Jose (in the center of the country). They have all modern conveniences and the feel of a nice suburban area in the US. I know others that love Dominical because it is quiet and remote. Others like Tamarindo and the dry tropical climate.

Finally, keep an open mind. Don't jump to conclusions based upon one source of information. Don't try to force your ideas on the Costa Ricans. Accept that their way of life is acceptable to them and you can live the way you want to live (you aren't going to change them because you think your ways are better). Look around. Travel to Costa Rica. Feel it out. You will know rather quickly if you are up for an adventure and learning more about what it takes to live in Costa Rica.

Holidays In Costa Rica, It's Guanacaste Day!

Today celebrates the 187th year since Guanacaste joined the Republic of Costa Rica. Guanacaste used to be part of Nicaragua. Today, July 25th is a Costa Rica National Holiday celebrated through Costa Rica. Government offices are closed and employees working today will be paid (by mandate) holiday pay. This is also the end of the mid winter (yes, Costa Rica calls this winter) school break. Students will be going back to school on Tuesday. This is one of the busiest weekends at the Pacific Beaches including Jaco Beach, where most of the hotels are full and charge high season rates. Holiday traffic will be heavy today as people from San Jose Costa Rica's Central Valley, including Escazu and Santa Ana return home from the long holiday weeked.

Do Buyers Agents exist in Costa Rica? What is a Costa Rica Buyers Agent? Why should I work with a Costa Rica Buyers Agent?

Real Estate practices in Costa Rica are evolving (slowly), but do not have the same legal structures and ethical requirements as being a licensed Realtor in the US or Canada. In fact, there is no Real Estate Licensing in Costa Rica.

The present government administration has talked about requiring real estate agents to be licensed, but with a lot of other tasks at hand with higher priority, nothing has been brought to the legislative assembly as of yet.

What does that mean to a buyer of Costa Rica Real Estate? It means that you need to be extra diligent in choosing a real estate professional in which to work with.

Buyers Agents focus on the needs of the buyer over the needs of the seller (and over the personal benefits of the real estate agent). In other words, a Costa Rica Buyers Agent works for the buyer - not the seller. Like in the United States, however, the seller still often pays the real estate commission. You will need to get testimonials and referrals from other buyers who have worked with the real estate buyers agent you are selecting prior to starting your search. By taking this extra step, you are assuring that the person is legitimate. In this modern technological age, someone can whip up a website in a matter of minutes and give themselves an online presence. If you are searching from outside of Costa Rica, how do you know if the real estate buyers agent is legitimate?

1. Call them and talk to them. Make sure you know how to reach them by telephone. Ask them where they live.
2. Make sure they live in Costa Rica and have lived in Costa Rica for more than one or two years.
3. Ask them what they do for a "day job"? Anyone can be a real estate agent in Costa Rica. Make sure they do this full time.
4. Ask for references that you can talk to. This may take a little longer to connect with, but any legitimate agent with good relationships with their clients will certainly be able to put you in touch with happy buyers.
5. Ask them if they have a "brick and mortar" office. The more successful real estate buyers agents will have a real office. There are a lot of "fly by night" real estate agents in Costa Rica. They move to Costa Rica, start a website and pretend to be an expert. Many younger ones come to surf. They are here today and gone tomorrow and really don't care too much if you are getting a good deal or not. Afterall, six months from now, they will be surfing in Panama, Belize or Mexico.
6. Make sure you have a good feeling about the Costa Rica Buyers Agent you are working with. Afterall, buying real estate in Costa Rica is a process that takes time. You will also require assistance from your agent after the sale and a good agent will not only help you buy the property, but will also help you integrate in the community.

The ship will be starting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with stops in Aruba, Panama (Panama Canal), Puerto Quetzal Guatemala, Huatulco Mexico, Acapulco Mexico, Manzanillo Mexico and Puntarenas Costa Rica. Costa Rica's Central Bank announced yesterday that Costa Rica's economy would grow at 4.5% for 2011, up from its predicted growth rate of 4.3% earlier this year. The Central Bank is now estimating growth for 2012 at 4.7%. Costa Rica has become known by eco-tourist and foreigners for its enticing vacation real estate, but Costa Rica is also enticing to multi-national businesses. Companies like IBM continue to find Costa Rica a good place to do business. IBM announced earlier this year that they would invest $300 million in a high tech computer IT Center in Costa Rica because of its high skilled work force and business friendly laws. Foreign direct investment in Costa Rica is expected to reach 2.2 Billion dollars in 2011, up 50% from 2010. Even while the US and most of the world's economies are faltering, Costa Rica's economy continues to grow.

Like the United States and many other first world countries, Costa Rica is changing the appearance of its currency. The currency in Costa Rica is called the Colon. Although the currency tends to fluctuate slightly based on a number of economic factors, Costa Rica's central government buys and sells currency in an effort to keep the colon at about 500 colones per us dollar. Common denominations are 1,000 (approx. $2 US) colones, 2,000 colones (approx. $4), 5,000 (approximately $10 US) colones and 10,000 (approx. $20 US) colones. Costa Rica now has printed 20,000 (approx. $40 US) colones and is working on 50,000 colones (about $100 US).

The typical day of Weather In Costa Rica during rainy season is morning sunshine, followed by a few mid day clouds with clouds building in the afternoon. Sometime between 4pm and 6pm, the sky opens up and down comes the rain. When it rains, it rains hard, but typically only last a couple of hours. Nights are comfortable with temperatures around 70F degrees and a nice ocean breeze. Rainy season is a favorite among locals and expats as the temperatures are cooler and the tropical rains are really magical. In Jaco, you will never be cold - even if you are caught in a downpour without your umbrella. The rain is always warm and refreshing. The temperatures in San Jose and the Central Valley are cooler with lows dipping into the low to mid 60's and even the 50's at times (but rarely). Shorts and t-shirts or golf shirts are the attire at the beach in Jaco, but in San Jose, Jeans and light jackets are worn in the afternoon and into the evening. The afternoon rains also start a couple of hours earlier in San Jose, Escazu and Santa Ana and aound the Central Valley.

Rainy Season in Costa Rica starts in early May and runs through November. Dry season or summer in Costa Rica is December through March with an occasional afternoon thundershower in the Central Valley, very rare sprinkle in Jaco, no rain in the arid, desert like climate of Tamarindo. The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica has the opposite seasons as the rest of the country. Also, the farther North on the Pacific Coast the drier, the farther South the more rain and Jaco receives the most moderate weather of all.

One thing you can be sure of when vacationing in Costa Rica is that the Costa Rica Weather is NEVER COLD!

JFL, the Jaco Football League, has just completed its second season. Teams sponsored by El Bohio Grill (for which this author played for), The Poseidon Hotel and Restaurant, Los Amigos Restaurant and Morgan's Cove Hotel and Casino competed for local braging rights for the mens flag football league. El Bohio played Los Amigos for the championship at the Quebrada Amarillo field. The game started out close with no score on either side for the first three possessions. El Bohio took a two score lead at half time, then dominated the second half. Both El Bohio and Los Amigos have a mix of Americans and Costa Ricans on their team. Congratulations to Los Amigos for a well played season and to El Bohio for its second straight Championship! Also thank you to the sponsors.

Fireworks, Beer & Barbecues On The 4th Of July - In Costa Rica?

You bet! The 4th of July Independence Day Exists for Expat's Living in Costa Rica

This year's 4th of July celebration by the American Colony Committee in Costa Rica is sure to be another hit with American Expat's living in Costa Rica. The party is put on every year in honor of the thousands of Americans and their children living in Costa Rica. This allows children of Americans in Costa Rica an opportunity to experience a kind of 4th of July Independence Celebration that they had growing up.

The events will be located at the new Mall by the IMAX Theatre on the East Side of CIMA Hospital in Escazu. In any normal year, hundreds of American's show up to get the free beer given out. This year, everyone is invited, but no free beer. The events include a flag ceremony by the US Marine Color Guard, patriotic music by the Western Kentucky University Band, University of Costa Rica Band, magic shows, clowns and juggling for children, an appearance by Uncle Sam, square dancing, hot dogs, pop and beer, American Legion and VFW Groups, a speech by Anne Slaughter Andrews, US Ambassador to Costa Rica and of course, one heck of a 4th of July Fireworks show.

Other 4th of July events include:

1. Los Suenos Resort and Marina - Herradura Jaco: A traditional 4th of July dinner (bbq chicken, baked beans, potatoe salad) followed by fireworks.

2. Playa Hermosa Jaco, Backyard Bar - will feature the chupacabres band along with a surf competition.

3. Grecia: Old fashioned, down-home, foot stompin style of Indepence Day fiesta put on by a local expat group.

4. Dominical: The beach lifeguards will host their annual benefit party on July 3rd at the Roca Verde Hotel featuring a silent auction, barbecue ribs and chicken plus margarita bar.

5. Tilaran (by Arenal): Longhorn Bar and Grill will hold its first ever annual Independence Day Chili Cook Off on July 3rd from 11am to 6pm.

6. Jaco Beach: Always a big expat celebration with fireworks up and down the beach at dusk.

It's almost time to pick up Nick from school at Las Nubes School which is located between Jaco and Herradura Costa Rica. Las Nubes is a private school in Jaco, taught in English to a diverse student body. Classes start at nursery age and go through high school. Las Nubes School is one of about four private schools near Jaco on the Central Pacific Coast. Costs will range from $250 per month to about $500 per month (depending on the school and the grade) while school is in session.

Drinking more Costa Rican coffee might actually be good for you.

A new study from the University of South Florida suggests that the consumption of coffee protects the brain against Alzheimer's Disease. The study explains that an unidentified component in coffee interacts with the caffeine in coffee to fight the disease. The researches are recommending drinking 4 to 5 cups of coffee each day, well within the "healthy limits" according to the group.

Costa Rican coffee farmers are happy as the price of coffee is up 100% this year over last years prices. Coffee farmers have been struggling for years due to low prices.

I love these studies. Coffee for my brain. Dark chocolate for its antioxidents or whatever they say about it. Wine for my heart. What about the beef producers? When are they going to produce a study that says consuming large amounts of steak is healthy?

So I say, drink up! There is nothing better than a cup of fresh, bold cup of Costa Rican coffee (from the terrace of your oceanfront home) to start off the day - so why not 4 or 5?

Concession Real Estate in Costa Rica - Risk Factors

Concession Property Risk Factors - Costa Rica
Real estate buyers in Costa Rica who are NOT citizens or have not yet established legal residency should be extremely careful if / when considering the purchase of Concession Property in Costa Rica.

What is concession property? In general, concession property (also known as leasehold property in North America) is where the government of Costa Rica owns the land and grants permission to use it.

Is all property in Costa Rica Concession Real Estate? NO. Most of the property in Costa Rica is titled fee simple (freehold), but most of the oceanfront real estate in Costa Rica is in fact concession property. In the 1970's the government of Costa Rica, in an effort to protect and maintain control of its shoreline on both the Pacific and Caribbean Coasts

Why is this important? Foreigners can not legally own more than a 49% share of Concession Land. Also the property taxes can be many times greater than fee simple property.

What are the risks for purchasing concession property in Costa Rica? The most obvious risk is that if the government decides not to renew your concession you can lose the property. Unlike eminent domain in the USA, if a legal concession is not renewed, the owner is entitled to retributions. The amount of retribution is based on the government’s determination of the value of the improvements on the land - not the cost of the land itself! Other risks include purchasing concession land without improvements on the land and not being granted the concession to build on the property or not being granted permission to build what you want to build on the property. Another risk is that the previous owner built on the concession land without the proper concessions and building permits. The concession expires, you reapply and are told that your home has not been properly permitted. You could be required to demolish the home and reapply.

Isn't it true that all concession land will soon revert to titled (fee simple or freehold) real estate in Costa Rica? Although there are always rumors in the air, mostly created by those wanting to maximize the sales potential of a certain (consession type) property.

Not Apples to Apples in Value. In most cases concession real estate sells for a much lower price that real estate that is titled fee simple for obvious reasons. There is more evidence to show that the government is actually increasing enforcement of concession land and will most likely not be open to giving up control of the property to foreigners.

Are you advising against foreign ownership of concession property? Because there is plenty of titled property available in Costa Rica, I do in most cases advise against purchasing concession real estate. However, as in any real estate transaction in Costa Rica it is advisable to complete an exhaustive due diligence process prior to purchasing or closing on a property.

I recommend getting two independent legal opinions by a firm that is at an arms length from the transaction. Some purchasers are more prone to risky purchases / investments while others are more conservative. If after doing proper due diligence and learning all of the facts a purchaser wants to accept the additional risks associated with purchasing concession real estate, then that is for the buyer to determine for themselves.

Remember, there is an ample supply of fee simple (free hold) properties with clean title in Costa Rica. Fee simple properties can be owned free and clear, 100% by foreigners without restrictions. It is usually a much cleaner purchase with fewer risks, lower taxes and in most cases a better, long-term investment.

Costa Rica has a stable government and is known as the Switzerland of Cental America. Thousands of Americans and Canadians are purchasing real estate for investment, second home and / or retirement. Use a good real estate professional such as Oceanside Realty who will work on your behalf as a buyer's agent and always perform proper due diligence.

Cabo Caletas is closing on their pre-sale lots after a couple of years of governmental challenges regarding environmental issues. There is no announced date of a golf course opening.

Jaco Beach Costa Rica. A movie theatre, “Citi Cinemas” opened up in Jaco this past weekend to a huge success. The review from Andrea Jimenez, real estate agent at Oceanside Realty is that there are four theatres, they are large, have comfortable seats and air-conditioning – and is no different than seeing a movie in San Jose or in the United States. One theatre even has 3D movies. All of the shows were sold out on Sunday. This is the first movie theatre on the Central and Pacific Coast.

Price. Who says things in Costa Rica aren’t cheaper than the United States? I recently went to a Matinee Movie in the US and my ticket price was $9 plus $10 for a soda and popcorn. Ticket prices in Jaco are only 2,000 colones (about $4). Presently showing is Kung Fu Panda II, The Fast and the Furious Five, Pirates of the Caribbean and Hangover Part II.

Firestone to Add jobs and renovations to Costa Rica facility

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about foreign direct investment in Costa Rica. Yesterday, it was announced that Firestone will be adding more jobs in Costa Rica along with millions of dollars in facilities improvements. Firestone is adding a financial servicing center which will bring 100 new jobs. It will also be investing $70 million dollars to its facility in Belen (a suburb of San Jose). Firestone recently invested $16 million in another plant that brought 160 jobs to the country.

Another foreign, multi-national company recognizing Costa Rica as a strategic location, stable and safe environment and a good place to do business.

The American Dream in Costa Rica. I recently watched a documentary about urban VS city development in the United States. It was a history of development from the early 1900's through modern times and showed different view points and studies. The conclusion was that although there was a big move to the suburbs in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's and a move back to the cities that started in the 1980's and that no matter your preference, the American dream was all about choice and variety.

In thinking about why so many Americans and Canadians are drawn to Costa Rica it is that similar opportunities exist in Costa Rica that existed in a developing North America. Unlike Mexico and other parts of the Caribbean where choice is limited and giant communities are required for safety, Costa Rica offers the ability to choose between city life and country life and beach or big city life. The climate of course always is a draw the yes, the people are very friendly and helpful and yes it is safe and secure and the political environment is stable. In Jaco, you can choose to live at the beach and still be able to take advantage of many restaurants and activities, all without needing a car. In Hermosa, you can still live near all of the services and the beach, but will need a car for a short commute (compare it to suburban life). In San Jose you can live downtwon or in Escazu or Santa Ana. In any of these areas you have big city life with much more variety than at the coast, but will need to drive an hour to get to the beach.

So much variety, so many opportunities. Costa Rica appeals to many for many different reasons, but the American Dream (Costa Rica is in the America's by the way) lives on!

Baxter Medical Devices Moves Jobs to Costa Rica

Costa Rica continues to attract foreign direct investment from international companies. Baxter is the latest company to relocated 135 jobs to Costa Rica in the highly skilled jobs category. Other big named companies like Amway Corp relocated 93 employees in 2009 and Boston Scientific relocated 1,400 jobs. Costa Rica is a neutral country and safe, unlike Mexico and many other Latin American alternatives and continues to grow its foreign direct investment. In 2010, there were 210 foreign owned companies operating in Costa Rica providing 58,472 jobs. The Chinchilla administration has goals of boosting these numbers.

What does this mean to foreigners thinking of investing in Costa Rica? It is another positive example that major companies are seeking out Costa Rica because of its location, safety, political and economic stability combined with the excellent value of a lower costs. In addition to the excellent climate, these are some of the same reasons many of my clients choose to live in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Real Estate Market Update. This high season in Costa Rica (December through April) has brought signs of promise as things have definitely picked up this year. Costa Rica Vacation rentals in the Jaco Beach area have significantly improved as has hotel bookings according to professionals in the industry. Prices for hotels and vacation rental properties do remain lower than in previous years, but bookings are up. Real Estate prices remain at bargain levels, though the supply of Jaco Properties at bargain prices are beginning to dwindle as inventory is down. Real estate sales appear to out pacing new listings of motivated sellers. As is the case in many vacation rental and tourist areas there are two markets. One is the real estate market of motivated sellers and the other is everybody else. Everyone else can be defined as those that are listing their properties above market value in the hopes that a buyer will come along and fall in the love with property emotionally and make a purchase. This type of seller is about 80% of the real estate market in Jaco and throughout Costa Rica Real Estate. This is another reason to work with a professional real estate agency - so you don't over pay market value.

All Inclusive Vacations in Costa Rica - Really?

Costa Rica Real Estate is one your mind and you decide you want to come down and check things out. What's the first thing so many people do? They go online and book an all inclusive hotel or resort. So many people are accustomed to having to stay in all inclusives in Jamaica, Mexico, Dominican Republic and other latin american destinations that they automatically do the same when the come to Costa Rica.

Are you ready for my opinion of this? STAY HOME. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME IN COMING TO COSTA RICA. Yes, you heard me correctly. If you aren't adventurous enough to stay outside of an all inclusving, how do you expect that you could actually be adventurous enough to live here? Really. Really. Further, how are you going to know what Costa Rica is like if you never go out of the resort. Getting picked up by a tour company and driving you to lunch and taking you on the tour, then driving you back is NOT exploring Costa Rica.

I know. I sound a bit harsh, but that is the reality of the situation. If you are of those people that can't venture out, then maybe you should look at buying in Florida and deal with hurricanes, traffic and periods of cold weather. However, if you are adventurous and you don't like to be part of the heard of giant tour groups, then maybe Costa Rica is right for you. We can even do one better for you. We will be glad to assist you in booking your accommodations here and giving you suggestion as to where to stay, dine and visit. Of course, nothing beats renting a car for a few days and venturing out on your own. Yes, Costa Rica is not Mexico and as long as you use a bit of common sense, it is safe to move about and experience Costa Rica. With a little help, you can have an adventurous and satisfying vacation and who knows, maybe you will even figure out that Costa Rica is the place that you want to spend you retirement in or come down and enjoy a vacation home in paradise.

One more quick suggestion. The guide books are all old and out of date and often misidentify many parts of Costa Rica. The authors of the leading books are very lazy and only spend a couple of days in each destination. I know. When I go to the states, I always visit the leading book stores and pick up all of the books on Costa Rica.

My rules for exploring Costa Rica.

1. Don't stay in all inclusives. If you are addicted to all inclusives, go some place cheaper. Mexico is cheap right now and laying in the sun is as good there as any place.
2. Use the guide books as a very general guide, but keep an open mind and make your own decisions about a destination. Further, if there are lot's of foreigners in a certain location, there are probably things that you may like there as well.
3. If you are considering a vacation or retirement home in Costa Rica, connect with a reputable real estate agent and make sure you can communicate with them. Check references.
4. Open up and listen. Give your agent information about what you like and don't like, then listen to suggestions.
5. Do online research prior to traveling, but remember, the internet can also be full of conflicting information so use the information you see online as a tool, but feel free to ask your agent about things you see.
6. Rent a car. You don't have to have a vehicle for your entire stay (especially around Jaco), but rent a car for a couple of days and get out and drive. You can see a lot in a short amount of time and it is very exiting when you are able to do things on your own.

Doing Our Part in Supporting the Police and Local Jaco Community Efforts

Oceanside Realty recently donated a new, specially equipped mountain bike to the Municpal Police in Jaco (Garabito). After attending a Chamber of Commere meeting that featured the local police chiefs addressing their needs Oceanside Realty and other members of the Chamber came together and purchased bikes and radio communication gear. It was a collective effort from the real estate community in Jaco showing support for our local police organizations.

The new bikes and gear will allow officers to better patrol the beach and town and get closer to the people. The bicycles were formally given at a ceremony at the police station on the beach on Friday.

Oceanside Realty is fully committed Jaco Beach and the surrounding areas. We also recently donated the landscaping for a large area at Jaco's Central Park, along with Dan Woodley donated and installed an air-conditioning unit at the high school nursery and continually donate to causes like the River Project which provides assistance to underpriviledged children and to other worthy causes through the Chamber and other organizations.

No Tsunami or Nuclear Energy in Costa Rica

Our hearts go out to the people of Japan following the recent earthquake, tsunami and nuclear problems. Effects of the tsunami wave were felt as far as California, but Costa Rica didn't experience any unusual waves or surges of the sea. Unlike Japan, Costa Rica has no nuclear power to meltdown should a major earthquake hit Costa Rica. 90% of Costa Rica's power comes from wind or water. Yet another reason to purchase Costa Rica real estate.

Here Comes The Scarlet Macaws (in Jaco)

Travelers to Jaco Costa Rica are being blessed by extra sightings of the beautiful and magnificant scarlet macaws. Scarlet macaws in the Central Pacific Region of Costa Rica are normally seen more often during green season (May to November), but this year there seems to be more macaws than ever and they are being seen in abundance all year around. On an average day I now see fifteen pairs of macaws flying along the coast between nesting areas and almond trees (one of their favorite snacks).

The extra sightings are being attributed to recent enforcement of the hunting and export of the birds for pets. The scarlet macaws are mostly seen in pairs as they are known to mate for life. In captivity, the birds can live up to 70 years. If you see an odd number of birds, either a mate has died or its a young bird yet to find a mate.

The next time you are in Jaco and you hear a prehistoric screeching sound, look to the skies. It is very likely that you will see a pair (or several pairs) of the beautifully colored birds.

The Jaco Chamber of Commerce met with top officials from both the US Embassy and the British Embassy regarding establishing diplomatic relations with their respective expat communities in the Jaco Beach area. Among topics discussed were citizen security, Costa Rican residency procedures, the border dispute with Nicaragua and embassy assistance for its citizens. Representing the United States Embassy was Paul Bridsall, Consular General. Representing the British Embassy was Deputy Head of Missions and Her Majesty's Counsel, Scott Simpson. Also attending was Jaco's Mayor, Chief of Police, Chief of Municipal Police and various local business leaders.

Jaco is often overlooked when it comes to Costa Rican politics, yet is a major investment area for US, British and Canadian Citiezens so it was good to have the representives visit our city. They agree to help us in any way possible and encouraged Expat's and tourists to register at the embassy while they are in Costa Rica so that they can be contacted by the Embassy in case of emergency. This is another function of the Jaco Chamber of Commerce working behind the scenes to make sure that your investments are protected, to have good Embassy contacts and to ensure full cooperation by the Embassy's when needed.

Note - the Canadian representative was unable to attend due to a conflicting appointment.

Good Bye, Jerry “Bubba” Halstrom - Bubba’s Fish Tacos and Tico Times Fishing Report
Jaco and Costa Rica lost one of it’s good guys this week with the passing of Jerry “Bubba” Halstrom, of a sudden heart attack. Born July 14th, 1965, Jerry was only 45 years old and is known around town as “Bubba” from his famous fish taco restaurant, Bubba’s Fish Tacos, but even more so for his friendly personality and his generosity in the community.

Jerry was an avid fisherman and wrote a weekly fishing column in the Tico Times. Jerry also facilitated fishing trips, vacation rentals and booked fishing charters out of Los Suenos.

Jerry “Bubba” Halstrom will be missed, but he certainly will not be forgotten!

Police officers were treated to a turtle release party in Playa Hermosa near Jacó this week. Some 300 tiny oliver ridley turtles were released into the surf. Police officers were being rewarded for keeping an eye on the turtle-nesting sites in the area. Franklin Cárdenas, the local police chief, said that in 15 years the number of turtle nests on the beaches had doubled from 750 to 1,500. The activity was at the beach side of the police station. The event was supervised by environmental ministry workers.

The Turtles are here to stay!

The Truth About Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica

I have received several emails and phone calls recently from clients about an email that has been circulating regarding turtle egg poaching (illegally taking the eggs, not a method of cooking eggs) in Costa Rica. Those of us familiar with Costa Rica know that Costa Rica isn't perfect, however,Costa Rica does more to protect the environment than any other emerging country and more than most first world countries. Take for example the turtle egg email that has gone viral and depicts Costa Ricans as being ignorant to the protection of the endangered sea turtles. If you are one of the few that have not seen it, the turtle email shows Costa Rican's on a beach harvesting turtling eggs with captions:

"Sea Turtle extinction is not Global Warming"
"Perhaps we have just discovered why the sea turtle is going extinct & it is not global warming. !!!!!!!.... "

"World shame coast in COSTA RICA"

At first glance this email makes your blood boil and generates an emotional urge to cuss out Costa Rica, boycott your planned Costa Rica vacation and forward it to everyone on your email list.

The truth of the matter is that Costa Rica does have strict laws against the illegal harvesting of turtle eggs, just like the United States and Canada have laws about the illegal hunting of ducks, deer and other animals. The citizens of the beach in which the photos were generated is allowed by permit a limited amount of legal turtle egg harvesting for the first 36 hours of the season. In 90 percent of Costa Rica, there is no legal harvesting of turtle eggs. Costa Rica's laws on turtle harvesting allow a few communities to legally take some eggs as has been done for hundreds of years by locals without destroying all of the eggs. AM Costa Rica recently reported about the practice of illegal turtle egg harvesting and the viral email. Also, there are many turtle conservation areas in which people dig up turtle eggs and bring them to turtle refuge incubators to be hatched and released back into the ocean. Whether you believe any amount of turle harvesting for human consumption is ethical or not, it is important that you have the facts about the email and Costa Rica's stance on this controversial topic and that Costa Rica does take protecting the environment seriously.

Today is Saturday in Costa Rica. It isn't bright and sunny in Jaco. It is a little overcast, but the weather is cool and refreshing. There are no hurricanes in Costa Rica, but during hurricane season, Costa Rica's weather is affected. Costa Rica usually gets more afternoon clouds and afternoon showers during hurricane season, but no hurricanes. Most hurricanes do not threaten south of Nicaragua so if you are condsiering a trip to Costa Rica in September or October bring your umbrella, but different than most of Mexico, Florida and the Caribbean, your Costa Rica vacation or Costa Rica real estate tour will not be interupted by a hurricane in Costa Rica.

This is the same location as the 2009 Billabong World Surfing Games also known as the olympics of surf where 100,000 spectators watched surfers from around the Costa Rica's Hermosa Beach near Jaco isn't only a place for retirement real estate, it is a beautiful part of Costa Rica that offers many activities. If you aren't into surfing shape, no worried. You will enjoy watching these athletes perform their craft as good as anyone in the world. By the way, Congratulations to Jaco surfer Jairo Perez, who not only won first place at the Pro East Coast Surfing Event in Virginia Beach last Saturday, but he also won over the crowd! Way to go Jairo!

Professional soccer has arrived in Jaco Beach, Costa Rica. Most people who visit Jaco have researched tourist activities and are familiar with zip line tours, white water rafting and other tours that are directed towards vacationers from Costa Rica and abroad. Having professional soccer in Jaco is like a small town in the United States receiving a division 3 baseball team, but even bigger. Because in Costa Rica, baseball isn't popular. American football isn't popular, nor is hockey, tennis, softball or basketball. Costa Rica's one and only national past time is soccer.

The municipal field in Jaco is regualtion size. The grass is green and looks to be in good shape. The grand stands are simple, small and not fancy, but covered to protect the fans from rain and the warm Costa Rica sun. The visitor side bleachers were removed a few years ago to be replaced with new ones. They have not yet been replaced. I attended today's game. The grand stand was full.

As the game was played, I observed the crowd. I saw Don Marvin, Jaco's mayor along with some of Jaco's businessmen, but mostly the stands were filled with proud citizens. Proud, that the once quiet little fishing village of Jaco, now a small town or city has a professional soccer team.

The fans shouted, "Jaco. Jaco. Jaco". A drum and a horn leading the charge. The final score was 1-0, Grecia.Even though the team didn't win on this day, the community of Jaco won big.

For future expats considering a new life and the possibility of purchasing real estate in Jaco, Costa Rica, rooting for the Jaco Rays is now one more thing to add to the list of the many things to do here!

Is Now a Good Time to Purchase Costa Rica Real Estate?

We live in intersting times. One day, the economy is improving, the next, it isn't. One day, unemployment in the US is improving, the next day, it isn't. Some economists say that the US and World economy is recovering, some say that it isn't others say it will be a slow recovery and some say a fast recovery. With so many opinions, who is to believe and how does this impact your timing of purchasing Costa Rica Real Estate.

My answer is it depends on you and your goals. Is the real estate market in Costa Rica a buyers market? Are there excellent deals out there? Does Costa Rica continue to be popular among foreigners wishing to retire here? Has the infrastructure improved? Is the government still stable? Is the weather still warm year around? Is Costa Rica still one of the most beautiful countries on earth? The answers are yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes to all of the above!
When I first started selling real estate in Costa Rica, the roads were horrible, the water didn't flow half of the time and when it did the pressure wasn't very good. The power went on and off constantly during the day and often stayed off for hours at a time. Basically, there was little or no infrastructure here, yet people believed in their dreams, had vission and looked past these obstacles. In fact, many of them loved the charm and character these obstacles brought to their experience. Prices were about the same as they are today, some were even higher. Today, the power is good, the water pressure strong, most of the roads have been improved and have a fresh coat of pavement. There is a new highway between the Pacific Coast and San Jose, Escazu and Santa Anna.

Has the market bottomed out? When will prices rise? Will they fall more? I like to use the phrase that my crystal ball has a crack in it and I can no longer see the future. I can say that Costa Rica is as affordable as ever, is as good of a value as ever, continues to draw North American's, has a lower cost of living that in comparable areas in the US and Canada, has a lower real estate (property) tax and is just plain and simple a wonderful country to live it.

Now is a great time to purchase Costa Rica real estate. Is it right for you? You will have to come on down and check it out and see for yourself. If you have already visited and are waiting for the perfect moment to purchase your dream property, all I have to say is don't wait too long or your perfect opportunity may pass you by.

Ken, I recently returned from the best scuba diving trip I have ever! We didn't dive off the coast of Costa Rica, but went on the dive charter to Coco Island in the Pacific. It was an experience of a lifetime and Costa Rica definitely deserves its Top Ten Dive Locations in the World status. I have been on a lot of vacations and have been diving off many Caribbean Islands and have never seen so many hammerhead sharks up so close and personal. It was a bit eery, but we felt like we were on another planet, not diving in Costa Rica's protected Coco Island territory. I guess it is protected by not only Costa Rica, but also is protected by the United Nations, so no fishing (charter, sport or commercial) is allowed. I'd recommend Coco Island scuba diving charters to any diver no matter their experience. These trips are all inclusive, so you don't need to bring anything, just be ready to be blown away by the life that comes alive in this under water Jurasic Park like experience! The kind staff of the Charter was also excellent and once again, Costa Rica has topped all of my expectations!

How to Choose Your Costa Rica Real Estate Agent

Buying real estate in Costa Rica or any foreign country, whether in Central America or elsewhere, requires working with a real estate agent who is located in that country, who is knowledgeable about the market, who is honest, who is experienced and who will work on your behalf.

Anything short of this and you are taking a big risk. Yet, I see this happen every day. People come down with the For Sale By Owner mentality and think that they are smart enough to do it on their own. They even think it will save them money, which is their primary motivator. I have seen many buyers take it upon themselves to get information from unreliable and almost entertaining sources, like taxi drivers, restaurant waiters, tour guides, etc. And even worse, they take the information at face value. Would you do this in the US or your home country? Absolutely not! But for some reason, they believe that the friendliness of the Costa Rican people, is enough to trust their life savings to a taxi driver.

It is important to ask any potential real estate agent you want to work with in Costa Rica for testimonials - not just a quick scan of those on the web page, but to actually talk to some of them. Listen carefully at what they tell you about how they were treated and how happy they are about their purchase. Second, make sure the real estate agent is experienced (in Costa Rica). Being a licensed real estate agent in Florida, Colorado or California doesn't help you in Costa Rica. The real estate laws, markets and process is different. Don't be afraid to ask for a copy of their resume. After all, you are going to spend a lot of money. How long have they been selling real estate? What is their real estate experience and mulit-disciplinary experience? Does your Costa Rica real estate agent own real estate in Costa Rica and the market where you are buying? If not, choose another agent.

Finally, after you have performed your due diligence on the real estate agent, you must put your trust in them and open up and tell them what you are looking for. Tell them what you don't want. Tell them what you like, what you don't like, etc., etc., etc.. Let them into your world so they can find you the property that best fits. Allow ample time to see numerous properties. Give good feedback on each property you see. Again, what you like, don't like, etc. The more the agent knows and understands, the better they can focus in on what you want. Trust your real estate agent with your thoughts and wishes. Don't worry. You aren't buying anything yet - you are only looking. Telling them what you like will only help your situation. Once you narrow your search to the top Costa Rica properties in regions that you like, you can now begin to narrow your choices and start negotiating. Again, tell your agent what you expect. Listen to feedback. Decide your offer and let the agent work on your behalf. Always, build in a due diligence clause so you can have a competent Costa Rican real estate attorney (not one in the US that isn't familiar with Costa Rican law, review the paperwork and check on the property title in the national registry, etc. before being obligated to purchase. Now you are ready to purchase and you can do so without fear and hesitation, confident that you have made the best decision on not only your dream Costa Rica property, but also the Costa Rica real estate agent that helped you along the way!

Costa Rica Weather - Rainy Season in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica Weather includes two seasons. Dry Season and Green or Rainy Season. Costa Ricans call the Dry Season (November to April) Summer and Rainy Season (May to October) winter lathough it never gets cold in Costa Rica. Daylight hours vary by only about 15 minutes from the longest day of the year to the shortest day of the year and average about 13 hours of sunlight each day. Because Costa Rica doesn't participate in Daylight Savings Time, the sun rises each morning at around 5am and sets around 6pm - year around.

A typical Rainy Season day in Costa Rica, starts with blue sky and sunshine. As the day heats up, the cooler mountain air in the rainforests meets the air at the coast and beaches, clouds develop followed by afternoon showers. Depending on the region in Costa Rica, the weather patterns may vary. In Central Costa Rica including San Jose, afternoon showers starting around 2pm, while many coastal areas see showers form later in the afternoon around 4pm. The majority of rainfall happens in May and October. October is the wettest month with twice the rainfall as May. Also, the extremes are in Guanacaste (dry plus floods during wet season) and Southern Zone starting at Dominical to the Osa. Also, Caribbean Coast gets more rain at different times of year and July is mostly dry (Indian Summer) throughout the country in a typical year.

Let me ask you. Which winter weather would you prefer? A winter with snow and cold or a winter with warm temperatures and afternoon rainshowers? You decide for yourself. I already have!

A Client Recently Asked Me about Crime in Costa Rica

The question was if Costa Rica is a peaceful country, why gated communities and why are there security guards? I get this question often, especially because when/if anything bad happens to someone in Costa Rica, it is immediately posted on the internet, blogs and in Costa Rica's English newspaper editorials thanks to the freedom of press and free speech that exists in Costa Rica.

My response:
Thanks for your question. The simple answer is that people are very friendly, probably the friendliest in Latin America (and towards to top in the world), but no different than anywhere else in the world, there is crime here too, but it is mostly petty and non-violent crime. Most of the crime is committed by a very small segment of the population. Not everyone lives in a gated community, but foreigners tend to like the added benefit of a gated community where you have a sub-community looking out for each other. This is especially helpful for part time residents that leave their homes vacant for extended period of times. A security guard is a simple deterrent and very few are armed (banks are an exception and bank robberies in Costa Rica are extremely rare). Property taxes are low in Costa Rica and up until a few years ago, there weren't many police officers. Costa Rica has trippled the number of police in the last couple of years so change is in order. Again, mostly against petty crime. Leave a purse or computer in a vehicle while your are at the beach, you increase your chances of having a crime committed against you. In Costa Rica, a little common sense goes a long way in greatly reducing your risks of falling victim to crime (just like in the US, Canada and elsewhere). I have lived here five years and have never had my car broken into and I put on about 25,000 miles/year. In the old days, a town would basically know everyone and if someone committed a crime, the citizens of that community would basically drive the criminal away. The laws were outdated, because this system worked (and in small town Costa Rica it still does). As Costa Rica grows and has become a melting pot with a segment of the population that is transient, its much harder to be self governed like the old days so laws are changing. It is a safe and pleasant place to live where my wife and 3 year old son can walk around town or on the beach and she can drive in Costa Rica with no problems. I wouldn't live in much of Latin America, because this wouldn't be possible and although I live in a small gated condo complex here, I am not locked in. We have the freedom to go to the beach, walk around town or ride our bicycles or jump in the car and explore this beautiful country (one of our favorite weekend activities).

The Mischaracterization of Jaco Area Continues...

I haven't written in the blog in for a while because I have been extremely busy and just haven't taken the time, but today, I just finished reading an article by a well known company that promotes living abroad. This company gives the impression that is it an unbiased advocacy group specializing in assisting North Americans that choose to live abroad. A few years ago they completely pulled out of Costa Rica and were heavily promoting Nicaragua. If you have done any recent research on Nicaragua, is about the last place on earth you would want to invest your money unless you think Chavez' Venezuela is a good bet. This time their focus was on an upcoming promotion of land in the Southern part of Costa Rica (yep - back in CR). Once again, the main part of the article wasn't about selling the area they were pushing, but instead selling hard against Jaco. You would think if Jaco was so bad, they wouldn't need to sell against it!

The description about Jaco was that it was wall to wall tourist bars and that the beach wasn't busy in the morning because everyone must be passed out with hangovers. By the way, they were in town or just passing through town for a couple of hours. I take offense to the article for a couple of reasons. First, they didn't spend much time in Jaco, yet they were experts. If they had spent a few days here with an open mind, they might actually learn something and be able to intelligently comment on it and the surrounding areas.

Next, they were comparing prices on the beach in Jaco to the area they were promoting. Unfortunately, the area they are promoting has no beach property for sale - it's in a concession zone. Foreigners can't own beach property in a concession zone. Knowing the area, I am assuming they are selling mountain properties, yet there was no mention in the article about the prices of various mountain properties or any comment about the many communities that surround Jaco (within 15 minutes north or south) that are equally convenient to get to as is Jaco.

Further, they are making assumptions that anyone who lives, visits or owns property in and around Jaco spends all of their time partying at bars - how ignorant and insulting! My wife and I moved to Jaco for many reasons. Bars and nightlife wasn't any of them. Jaco and the Jaco area is home to about 15,000 to 30,000 people depending on how far north/south you want to include. Jaco has about four or five bars I would call nightclubs that are open late, a few quaint beach restaurant/bar type establishments and a few sports bars with restaurants. Jaco has four nice grocery stores plus several small mom and pop stores, yet I have hardly heard to it being referred to as the grocery capital of Costa Rica. Surfing is still a huge draw in Jaco as the area boasts the most consistent waves in the world. In fact, neighboring Hermosa hosted the 2009 World Surfing Games (the Olympics of surf), yet the article gave the conclusion that the surf shops had been turned into bars and shops for designer sunglasses. I think there is one shop for designer sunglasses and about fifteen or twenty surf shops in downtown Jaco.

Next, the article concluded, of course, that Jaco was a place to avoid and the area that they were promoting was the promise land, then gave an alter call to attend their seminar on investing in Costa Rica which was to be held, where? At a four star resort in Herradura-Jaco! How humorous is that?

Yes, I guess there is more to offer in Jaco than the night life, which is way overemphasized anyway. If you are looking for a party, San Jose is a much better venue as Jaco draws an active and inconsistent crowd that may enjoy a few drinks, but are back on their mountain bikes, surf or boogie boards, swinging a golf club, reeling in a swordfish, marlin or tuna, swimming in the hotel or condo pool, zip lining, bird watching, working out at one of the local gyms, doing a multitude of other activities or checking into things back home on a modern, high speed internet system. Yes, unfortunately the Jaco area has the best infrastructure of any coastal area in CR, including, smooth black topped roads, great tasting water (out of the tap), reliable electricity, great cell phone coverage, a wonderful cable TV selection with many US channels and high speed internet. The area being promoted has very little of this, which is OK by me, if you are into that because there is something for everyone in Costa Rica. Come to think of it, the area in and around Jaco has lots of rural property, rain forest, national parks, natural beaches, wildlife, etc. It's just a lot easier to get here and more convenient being here because of the diversity of restaurants, beaches, weather, development properties, people, the presence of an active, local police force and the fact you are close to everything when you are here.

Next time you are thinking about Costa Rica, please don't forget to spend a few days in Jaco, Hermosa, Herradura and our surrounding areas, but be warned. Contrary to the tourist books and things you read on the internet, if you come with an open mind, YOU MAY ACTUALLY FALL IN LOVE WITH IT like my wife and I did and many of our non-clubbing neighbors!

Laura Chinchilla Wins Costa Rica Presidential Election

PLN candidate, Laura Chinchilla, wins by a landslide and will become Costa Rica's first female president. Chinchilla was a vice president in the current, Oscar Arias administration as well as serving as National Security Advisor. In her victory speach last night, Chinchilla pledged to invest in security, education, to improve Costa Rica's social security program, to remain a transparent democracy and also to make Costa Rica, Central America's first developed nation.

The positive for those unfamiliar with Costa Rican politics is that Costa Rica is in for more of what was considered a very positive and successful presidency by Oscar Arias and that Costa Rica will continue as a free and democratic country and will continue to invest in education, infrastructure and will focus on improving security. These are all positives for the tourism industry and for those who have or have plans to invest in real estate or a business start-up in Costa Rica.

It's More Than Superbowl Sunday in Costa Rica

Today a huge audience of sports fans from around the world will tune in to the Suberbowl where the New Orleans Saints will battle the Indianapolis Colts for NFL bragging rights.

Today in Costa Rica it is election day. In addition to tuning in to the Superbowl tonight, we will also be watching the polling data to see who will lead Costa Rica for the next 4 years. Laura Chincilla is favored with about 43% of the vote with the next two candidates each with around 20% of votes. It is almost a sure thing that Ms Chincilla will receive the most votes, but in Costa Rica a candidate needs to carry 40% of the total vote in order to achieve victory. Anything less will result in a run-off election between the top two candidates. If that happens, political parties (there are five major parties) can make back door deals and Ms Chincilla may not carry the vote.

Chinchilla is a former vice president in the present administration of Oscar Arias and will most likely carry the agenda of the last four years forward.

New Highway a Huge Success for Pacific Coast

The opening of the new highway linking the Pacific Coast to San Jose was a huge success. So big of a success that this past weekend saw 35,000 vehicles per day traveling between the city and the coast. The beach in Jaco, which is approximately 2.5 miles long and which is never busy according to North American standards drew the most people since Christmas and Easter. Don't like the crowds, but don't want to be stranded in the middle of no where in Guanacaste? No worries. The Pacific Coast beaches are linked by a modern coastal highway that brings you to about 40 beaches within a 30 minute radias of Jaco.

Despite the naysayers, the real estate in the Central Pacific is drawing both local and international demand. There are still some deals, but the best deals are getting snatched up. If you are seriously considering real estate in Costa Rica, this is the area you want to focus on and now is the time before prices go up.

It's Open....and it's BEAUTIFUL!!!

The new highway linking San Jose to the Central Coast opened on Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony by President, Oscar Arias. I had the pleasure - yes I said pleasure - of driving to San Jose on Thursday. The road is smooth and wide with gradual elevation climbs and decents. It took me only 65 minutes to drive to the upscale suburb of Escazu (megga shopping mall and CIMA Hospital) and another 12 minutes to the airport. I am told the airport will be quicker when all of the exits and over passes are complete. A normal trip to San Jose on the old highway included a narrow road with good pavement, but lot's of switchbacks and was pretty exhausting. Think you'll miss the old scenary? Not to worry. The route is still surrounded by mountains, valleys and rivers with spectacular views. And, for old times sake, you can always drive the old highway to remind you how much Costa Rica has progressed and to appreciate the progress that is being made!

Joan Rivers in Costa Rica

It's been all over the local news here in Costa Rica, the national news in the US and Canada and now Costa Rica is part of Joan Rivers' new stand up comedy show. After vacationing in Costa Rica over the holidays, Joan was at the Juan Santa Maria Airport in San Jose attempting to return to New York for her next comedy show, when a security guard found a problem with her ticket. It appears that her passport has two names and Continental Airlines misspelled both of them. To make a long story short, Ms Rivers missed her plane, had only $100 with her and was driven for free by a kind taxi driver to a hotel - in the dark of night and was able to catch a flight out the following day. She comments that she has never been so scared in her life - not knowing where the taxi driver was taking her.

All's well that ends well. Joan Rivers says that she loves Costa Rica and will certainly return in the future and now has some new material for her comedy act!

Thank you Joan for being such a good sport and for the free publicity for Costa Rica.

Hmmm. You think it’s a coincidence? Costa Rica is one of the very few countries to have abolished its army, and it’s also arguably the happiest nation on earth.

There are several ways of measuring happiness in countries, all inexact, but this pearl of Central America does stunningly well by whatever system is used. For example, the World Database of Happiness, compiled by a Dutch sociologist on the basis of answers to surveys by Gallup and others, lists Costa Rica in the top spot out of 148 nations.

That’s because Costa Ricans, asked to rate their own happiness on a 10-point scale, average 8.5. Denmark is next at 8.3, the United States ranks 20th at 7.4 and Togo and Tanzania bring up the caboose at 2.6.

Scholars also calculate happiness by determining “happy life years.” This figure results from merging average self-reported happiness, as above, with life expectancy. Using this system, Costa Rica again easily tops the list. The United States is 19th, and Zimbabwe comes in last.

A third approach is the “happy planet index,” devised by the New Economics Foundation, a liberal think tank. This combines happiness and longevity but adjusts for environmental impact — such as the carbon that countries spew.

Here again, Costa Rica wins the day, for achieving contentment and longevity in an environmentally sustainable way. The Dominican Republic ranks second, the United States 114th (because of its huge ecological footprint) and Zimbabwe is last.

Maybe Costa Rican contentment has something to do with the chance to explore dazzling beaches on both sides of the country, when one isn’t admiring the sloths in the jungle (sloths truly are slothful, I discovered; they are the tortoises of the trees). Costa Rica has done an unusually good job preserving nature, and it’s surely easier to be happy while basking in sunshine and greenery than while shivering up north and suffering “nature deficit disorder.”

After dragging my 12-year-old daughter through Honduran slums and Nicaraguan villages on this trip, she was delighted to see a Costa Rican beach and stroll through a national park. Among her favorite animals now: iguanas and sloths.

What sets Costa Rica apart is its remarkable decision in 1949 to dissolve its armed forces and invest instead in education. Increased schooling created a more stable society, less prone to the conflicts that have raged elsewhere in Central America. Education also boosted the economy, enabling the country to become a major exporter of computer chips and improving English-language skills so as to attract American eco-tourists.

I’m not antimilitary. But the evidence is strong that education is often a far better investment than artillery.

In Costa Rica, rising education levels also fostered impressive gender equality so that it ranks higher than the United States in the World Economic Forum gender gap index. This allows Costa Rica to use its female population more productively than is true in most of the region. Likewise, education nurtured improvements in health care, with life expectancy now about the same as in the United States — a bit longer in some data sets, a bit shorter in others.

Rising education levels also led the country to preserve its lush environment as an economic asset. Costa Rica is an ecological pioneer, introducing a carbon tax in 1997. The Environmental Performance Index, a collaboration of Yale and Columbia Universities, ranks Costa Rica at No. 5 in the world, the best outside Europe.

This emphasis on the environment hasn’t sabotaged Costa Rica’s economy but has bolstered it. Indeed, Costa Rica is one of the few countries that is seeing migration from the United States: Yankees are moving here to enjoy a low-cost retirement. My hunch is that in 25 years, we’ll see large numbers of English-speaking retirement communities along the Costa Rican coast.

Latin countries generally do well in happiness surveys. Mexico and Colombia rank higher than the United States in self-reported contentment. Perhaps one reason is a cultural emphasis on family and friends, on social capital over financial capital — but then again, Mexicans sometimes slip into the United States, presumably in pursuit of both happiness and assets.

Cross-country comparisons of happiness are controversial and uncertain. But what does seem quite clear is that Costa Rica’s national decision to invest in education rather than arms has paid rich dividends. Maybe the lesson for the United States is that we should devote fewer resources to shoring up foreign armies and more to bolstering schools both at home and abroad.

In the meantime, I encourage you to conduct your own research in Costa Rica, exploring those magnificent beaches or admiring those slothful sloths. It’ll surely make you happy.

Want third world prices - go to a third world country - you won't like it!

I had some people walk into my office recently who came to Costa Rica because they heard it was cheap. On their first day here, they went to the grocery store and attempted to purchase cheese and ice cream and an assortment of other items. They came into my office and were furious because they thought EVERYTHING in Costa Rica was supposed to be very cheap. They wanted to challenge me, thought I had never spoken to them before. They were really upset. I really didn't know what to say, but told them what I tell everyone. If you are buying groceries, some things are less expensive, some things more expensive (cheese and ice cream are more expensive), other things are the same. In general my wife and I pay about 15% to 20% less on groceries in Costa Rica than we did in the US. If you use the Cheese and Ice Cream index, you will be disappointed. Costa Rica is about quality of life in a laid back country that is by no means third world. In fact, most of Costa Rica is second world and much of it like its healthcare system is first world. So how can you sell Costa Rica as less expensive than the US or Canada? Here's how:

1. I get my haircut in a beauty shop including a shampoo for 3,000 colones (about $5). I could go to the local barber for around $2. In the US, I would pay about $20 on up for this or $8 at Supercuts for a basic cut without the wash.

2. Healthcare is first world. My wife had an emergency C-Section when my son was born. It cost us about $3,500 total at the best private hospital in Costa Rica with US trained Doctors and a couple of extra days in the hospital. In the US this would cost $30,000.

3. Property taxes. I paid between 1 and 3% at various residences for property taxes in the US. Here we pay .25% (in case you can't see the decimal point that is one quarter of one percent).

4. A full time domestic worker would cost us no less than minimum wage in the US or about $10/hr minimum plus taxes. In Costa Rica, our full time domestic worker costs about $2 / hr. She cleans, cooks and takes care of our 3 year old son five days a week. Daycare in the US is about $400 per week. We get one on one care and he is already bi-lingual.

5. Beachfront property is less than half and sometimes up to 90% less than comparable property in the US, plus it is always warm here. We can enjoy our beachfront property and swimming pool 365 days per year. Even Florida gets cold for a few months and in California you need a wetsuit to go in the ocean. Our year around average ocean water temperature is about 80 degrees.

6. Property insurance. We pay about $600 per year from property insurance which includes hurricanes and earthquakes plus fire and all natural disasters. Hurricane insurance alone in Florida can cost $6,000 / year plus.

7. Maintenance Work. A maintenace worker's wage is around $2/hr. In the US we would pay $10 to $20 per hour.

8. Dentist. Get a filing for $30 and a crown for $200. Cleanings with all of the new equipment and procedures is $30 (with x-rays add another $10). The dentists are well trained, equipment sterile and using modern equipment. This is 50% to 75% less than in the US or Canada.

9. Doctor Checkup by a Harvard Med School Internist including EKG is $80. Compare to several hundred dollars in the US plus having to first be seen and recommended by your primary care physician.

10. Lunch. Get a full dinner of rice, beans, chicken breast (or frech fish or beef), plus three kinds of salads, fried plantains and a beverage for 2,000 colones or about $3.50. Compare with $8 to $12 plus in the US or Canada or compare with unhealthy fast food for the same price.

11. Dinner at a nice restaurant - bistro style gourmet meal. $15 per person. Compare to $35 and up in the US and Canada.

12. Taxi - go anywhere in Jaco for 1,000 colones (less than $2). Compare to $8 or more in the US.

13. Filet Mignon. Buy a nice filet for about $3.50 per pound - about the same price as hamburger.

14. Filet of Tuna or other fresh fish. Fresh off the boat (today's catch) only about $3 to $5 per pound. Compare with $10 - $20 per pound (and usually a day or two old or frozen).

15. A large bag of fresh fruits and vegetables from the Farmers Market costs $5. Compare to $20 in the US and Canada for produce that is shipped in from other parts of the world for 9 months of the year.

Is everything in Costa Rica cheap? No, but there is a reason that the average Costa Rica lives a long, happy, healthy life on a wage of about $500/month.

Happy New Year from Costa Rica

At midnight in Costa Rica on Jan 1st it is not unusual to see people walking around the block with their suitcases! Folklore says that by doing so at the stroke of midnight will ensure a year full of travels. Other superstitions include sprinkling rice in the corners of your home, then sweeping them up and packing them in a bag will guarantee food on the table all year. Gathering blue wildflowers on Jan 1 will keep eye ailments away and whatever you are doing at the stroke of midnight will characterize your year to come.

My family's tradition is to go for a walk in the mountains and on the beach on New Years day, followed by a swim in the pool, some College Football, reflection on the past year and goal setting for the new year!

Today is the first day of 2010! A new decade. A new start. This is the year to make your dreams a reality! So, even if you didn't parade around the block with your luggage at midnight, there is still time to make traveling to Costa Rica part of your New Year's Resolution for 2010!

RUSH: Stacy somewhere in Georgia. We last heard from Stacy when she called from underneath a tree somewhere, she didn't want to be any more specific than that. She's in the insurance business and we welcome her back. How are you?

CALLER: Well, hi, Rush. How are you?

RUSH: Very well thanks.

CALLER: Well, listen, before I tell you how my little company is enduring the House bill, it seems to me when the Gitmo five get up to New York City, the judge is going to ban cameras from the court, so only the newspapers will be allowed in, it seems to me that Holder is announcing the newspaper bailout plan.

RUSH: I thought I heard Holder say -- (laughing) I thought I heard Holder say that there were going to be cameras in there.

CALLER: Oh, yeah, right. (laughing) But listen, as an employee of an insurance company, we got our benefit booklets this week and guess what we're doing now? We have set up facilities in Costa Rica and we are paying 100% of all medical charges associated with heart valve replacement, bypass surgeries, knee replacements, hip replacements, and spinal fusion if you travel to Costa Rica to have it done. Now, it does not cover the travel expenses.

RUSH: Hold it a minute. No, no, no. You gotta start at the beginning. You call here and say your company is writing policies now, and you have set up facilities in Costa Rica.

CALLER: Yes, sir.

RUSH: What kind of facilities has your insurance company set up?

CALLER: Well, the insurance company is hoping to set up hospital surgical centers in Costa Rica.

RUSH: Wait a minute. Your insurance company is going to build hospitals?

CALLER: Well, no, they're partnering with people who do that --

RUSH: All right. So your insurance company --

CALLER: -- who build these facilities.

RUSH: -- in Costa Rica, and you're going to pay 100% of all medical charges associated with heart valve replacement, bypass surgeries, knee replacements, hip replacements, spinal fusion if you travel to Costa Rica?

CALLER: Yep. And we've even got a travel agency who helps arrange the travel arrangements for coming back after you had those kind of procedures.

RUSH: So your company is insuring itself against the House health care bill and Obamacare by setting up essentially offshore medical centers?

CALLER: We most certainly are.

RUSH: How do you make money here if you're going to pay 100% of all of these procedures' costs?

CALLER: You know, I don't know the details to that. I just learned about it this week so I can't tell you that, but I do know the money is going to come in from investments and other ways insurance companies make money, we don't just gather our premiums and put them in a back account.

RUSH: Yes, I understand that. So this is your way of opting out of Obamacare and not being put out of business. So if I happen to want a knee replacement or need one, all I gotta do is contact you, find a way to get myself to Costa Rica via your travel agency, and everything is picked up a hundred percent based on whatever my policy with you costs?

CALLER: Exactly. There's no deductible, no coinsurance, no copay. So they're going to decapitate --

RUSH: Wait a minute, wait a second, now, you can't just gloss over this stuff, Stacy. You're going to have to explain how this can be done. No deductible, no copay, 100% -- you know, I have great empathy. That's why I'm a great host, and I can tell you many in the audience are not buying this.

CALLER: Well, I can e-mail you a link to our sub-department that's handling these arrangements and you can post it. It's out there. It's on the Web.

RUSH: No, no. They believe what you're saying. They don't believe that there's no deductible, that there's no copay, 100% covered. The only thing they don't know is what does this cost 'em.

CALLER: Well, it's going to be your standard policy. I mean it's not going to be necessarily any cheaper, but what it will be is your procedure when you need it without standing in line. That's what it's going to be.

RUSH: And it will still be cheaper than the House bill and you'll be guaranteed to get treated.

CALLER: Absolutely. So, you know, they can decapitate the doctors all they want. And, incidentally, the House bill, the bundling only applies to hospitals. Specialists are also going to be decapitated. It's going to be done in a geographic region or something to that effect. But the decapitation is in there --

RUSH: I gotta jump in here again. For those of you in Rio Linda, we're not actually talking about the guillotine here.

CALLER: (laughing)

RUSH: Well, with this administration you never know what some people would believe.

CALLER: Well, this is true. I mean I wouldn't have believed that Holder is going to bail out newspapers by bringing terrorists into New York City to have show trials.

RUSH: Why did you choose Costa Rica?

CALLER: I have no idea why they did that. You know, I'm a business analyst. I don't work in the marketing and all of that. I work on computer systems. But I'll be happy to e-mail you the benefit booklet if you will take off all identification information, you know, blank it out and I'll be happy to e-mail it to you and you can post it. It's right there. Now, you'll still have to have your physical therapy, all that stateside. But for these high dollar procedures, it is less than half the cost to do it in Costa Rica.

RUSH: Ah. Okay, there's the answer I was looking for: Less than half the cost than under the House bill.

CALLER: Absolutely.

RUSH: Now, does that mean Costa Rican doctors and nurses or are you also going to hire American doctors who want to opt out and not get decapitated in Medicare and relocate 'em to Costa Rica?

CALLER: I have a feeling that it won't take a lot to lure highly trained, highly specialized physicians to a sunny tropical island to be paid the amount that they're worth to do what they love to do.

RUSH: It's actually not an island but it is tropical, and it is an up-and-coming vacation destination for the truly enlightened.

CALLER: And you know we've been doing this with dental for a number of years. You can have full dental work done at a third of the cost there so a lot of people have been doing that, but this is the first I've seen of these very precise, very high-tech procedures that they're going to offer. And you know how we're going to make our killing, Rush? Even if it's only $50 per person that we make as a net profit, there are going to be so many people trying to get out of the government plan and get what they need done and get it now that they'll be beating our doors down.

RUSH: Yeah. I can see that. I'm just worried here that now that you've made this public, you know the bill still hasn't been amended. (laughing)

CALLER: But, you know, hey, Harry Reid --

RUSH: I mean don't be surprised if they put a provision: "You may not leave the country for health care services."

CALLER: Well, but Harry Reid's already got it on the Senate schedule. He can't change it that much or they'll never get it through this year. So go ahead, guys, feel free. But you know what I love, Rush, all of us little peons here just doing our thing are so much smarter than those guys up there. They think they've got us between a rock and a hard place. Ha. You watch us.

RUSH: That is a great thing about entrepreneurism. People always find a way around these people and the obstacles they put in the way. It's just a shame that has to happen, but yours is a great illustration of how that happens.

CALLER: Oh, you know, we make it work. So I hope you have a fabulous Friday and I'm so glad your cochlear implant got fixed.

RUSH: Well, thanks very much. (laughing) You're just a pistol.

CALLER: Well, I try.

RUSH: It's on the fritz here again. I'm having to slap the thing silly when it starts going out on me.

CALLER: Hey, you better get that off the web cam. The next thing you know Marco will have it on his website as you're a masochist or something.

RUSH: (laughing) You know how they are.

RUSH: Oh, yeah, absolutely. All right, look, I appreciate, Stacy. Stay in touch. Oh. Stay on hold. We have a super-secret e-mail address.

RUSH: I do want to see this pamphlet.

CALLER: Okay, sure!

RUSH: All right.

CALLER: I'll have it to you tonight.

RUSH: E-mails are pouring in to me, folks, from website subscribers who know all about Costa Rica. We're all Costa Ricans now! It's fine and dandy, except the Canadians have to leave, too, and they come here. But I'm learning all kinds of things. There are now vacation surgical tours. You need a minor surgery, you schedule it a vacation spot. The costs are much less, you go for two weeks, you get your recoup time, you come back, bammo! Just a couple sample e-mails here. "Dear Rush..." This is from Blake Hibbard. "Costa Rica health care costs are about a quarter of what they are here. Good private doctors. I go there a lot. There are always women on the planes coming home who have had plastic surgery.

"Ten grand there buys you the whole deal: Face, boobs, lipo, et cetera." Lipo! The whole deal, ten grand. Another one: "Costa Rica has the highest percentage of US trained doctors in Latin America. Relocation of doctors is possible, but you need to be board certified in Costa Rica and join the national College of Medicine. It takes time but you can get highly competent doctors and state-of-the-art private hospitals for a fraction of the cost of the USA," Benicio Lines, Coral Gables, Florida. There are thousands of them that have poured in here. And I had no idea, because I don't go to the doctor anyway, wherever he is. See what you learn on this program? Folks, I'm going to tell you something. When the host learns something, it's big, 'cause I know most everything that's important to know -- and I've learned something I didn't know today. That's a grand-slam, home run of a show.

Costa Rica Medical Introduced on Rush Limbaugh Show

Friday afternoon listeners of the Rush Limbaugh show were entertained by a caller who works for an insurance company that is offering 100% paid procedures for patients willing to travel to Costa Rica for the procedure. There will be no copay, no deductible and they will pay 100% of the costs of travel and expenses while in Costa Rica. Whether you like his politics or not, about 20 million people are now more informed about the fact that Healthcare in Costa Rica is top notch, about half or less than a similar procedure in the US and is becoming more popular for those willing to travel for a procedure. Medical tourism is becomming more and more popular in Costa Rica and the Costa Rican government is heavily promoting it healthcare services outside of the country. Costa Rica is ranked with Canada for quality of healthcare and Costa Rica enjoys more US trained doctors than any other Latin American country.

Those of us who live here and who have had to experience the healthcare system here already know all of this and now the secret is out. Look out Costa Rica here they come!

Comparing Costa Rica to Nicaragua is Like Comparing Apples to Grapes

Yes, you read the caption correct. Comparing Costa Rica to Nicaragua is like comparing apples to grapes - not oranges!

I recently received an email from someone that used to live in Costa Rica and who is now promoting Nicaragua. Several of my clients also received the email and asked me to comment. My first comment is that this person stole a mailing list from his previous employer and he is using that to promote his new business venture in Nicaragua. I would caution working with this individual. Next, the email says that Nicaragua is the Costa Rica or Mexico of 15 years ago. Nicaragua is certainly no Costa Rica, it may be more like Mexico, but even much less stable than Mexico.

Costa Rica has been politically stable for over 80 years and is constantly appearing at the top of indepent studies on Central and Latin America. Nicaragua reelected Daniel Ortega, the Dictator that caused harm through the 1970's and 1980's. The Nicaraguan government continues to seize private enterprise for "the greater good," including land that was legally purchased by foreigners over the last several years. Further, Ortega has aligned himself and Nicaragua with Cubas, Castro Brothers, Venezuela's Chavez, Iran and Russia. This is not a country that ranks high on the list of political stability and free enterprise. Yes, Nicaragua is a beautiful country. Yes, it costs less to live in Nicaragua. Yes, there is more violent crime in Nicaragua with foreigners being targeted.

The email talks about "blood in the streets" as a good time to buy. Sure, you can buy property in Nicaragua for less than in Costa Rica, but at what risk? I wouldn't gamble my life savings in a country that has demonstrated over the years that the government can seize property when they wish, that the govenrment is moving away from democracy and going back to the tactics of the 1970's. The Sandinista's are on the rise and that is not good for property owners or people who have investments in this country. Look at what Chavez has done and continues to do in Venezuela and you will see where Nicaragua is most likely headed. One more thing, Ortega is working to extend the term limits in Nicaragua just like the ousted president of Hondouras did, just like was done in Bolivia, just like Chavez did in Nicaragua. These governments are all about gaining power and assuming their dictatorships under the premise of being democratic.

Next, the email also compares Costa Rica with Miami, which is also rediculous. Beachfront in Costa Rica is still greatly discounted over beachfront in Miami and throughout the US. Holding costs such as property taxes, insurance (try to buy hurricane insurance in Miami - CR has no hurricanes), and homeowners dues are much lower in Costa Rica than in Miami. There is NO comparison. In fact, if you want to feel good by buying property in Miami that has been discounted 50% from its false market highs, then go for it. Values in Costa Rica are stable, but still a much better value than apples to apples discounted properties in Miami.

Costa Rica has been free and democratic for over 80 years and it was Costa Rica that worked hard to facilitate the end of the Sandinista Regime and the civil war in Nicaragua in the 1980's. Oscar Arias, Costa Rica's current President was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts (back when the Nobel Peace Price meant something).

Finally, if you are looking for a safe and stable place to invest or to spend your retirement years, in a country that is peaceful and that has been without a military since the 1940's, where it is less expensive to live than the US or Canada, where most goods and services are readily available, in a country that is one of the most beautiful places on earth, where it never gets cold, where beaches and water run along both East and West borders and mountains and rainforest in the center of the country, where the people are the most friendly and the happiest on earth (according to a recent independent study), where the life expectancy is greater than the US or Canada and is only 2nd in the world, where healthcare is readily availalble at great prices (about 30% to 50% of that in the US) with modern technology and many foreign trained doctors and ranked with Canada for quality of healthcare, where hundreds of multi-national companies like Intel, HP, Novartis and others have established Latin American Headquarters, where there are numerous flights to and from the US on a daily basis on American, Delta, Continental, US Air, Spirit, Frontier, Jet Blue, Taca and many more, in the same time zones (or within an hour of two) from all of North America and where life is a little bit different from that in the US (slower paced) and the quality of life is wonderful, then Costa Rica is where you should concentrate your efforts.

If you like a big gamble, don't mind big risks and seek "blood on the streets" environments, you may want to go to Nicaragua. Personally, I'll put my money on Costa Rica (and especially in the Jaco/Hermosa area), in a proven market (Costa Rica weathered the recent economic crisis well), with good infrastructure, as my indicators give me reason to believe that the big appreciation is yet to come.

Costa Rica Tops for Latin America Says Another Independent Study!

Costa Rica is not just a small, tropical country where it is cheap to travel and live.Costa Rica is more like the developed world than any other Latin American Country. It is why I live here and why tens of thousands of North Americans love it as well! It is great to come down and fall in love with the beauty and be overtaken emotionally. This study and many others show that there is real good evidence that backs up the emotional thinking with good hard facts that Costa Rica really is what we claim it to be. No other Latin American nation can say the same!

About the Study
Costa Rica has been ranked 32nd of 104 countries in the third edition of the Legatum Prosperity Index and ranks higher than any other Latin American Country! The study, by the Legatum Institute Oxford Analytica and panels of experts in economics, development, history, sociology and science. It is basically a measure of quality of life and ease in doing business. According to it's webiste, http://www.prosperity.com/, Legatum is:

"The Legatum Prosperity Index is the world’s only global assessment of wealth and wellbeing; unlike other studies that rank countries by actual levels of wealth, life satisfaction or development, the Prosperity Index produces rankings based upon the very foundations of prosperity – those factors that help drive economic growth and produce happy citizens over the long term."

The top of the list featured, "Finland headed the general classification followed by Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Australia, Canada, The Netherlands, the United States, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany."

"In South America the countries with the highest ratings in democratic institutions and personal liberty in general get a good total score in prosperity," said Willaim Inboden, senior vice president of the institute. "In the same way nations that have low levels of internal security and protection, such as Venezuela, are found much lower in the general classification."

Costa Rica was also recently ranked number one in the world in a "Happiness Index" conducted by an independent organization from Great Britain.

FDI Report Ranks Costa Rica 2nd in CA and Caribbean

Costa Rica was ranked the second most attractive country (behind Puerto Rico) for foreign investors in the Central American and Caribbean region in a report released by FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) Magazine in August. The report, which ranged the region's :foreign direct investment countries of the future," evaluated 31 countries across seven categories to determine the final rankings. Costa Rica ranked in the top five in five of the catategories, including first in human resources. Puerto Rico ranked 1st...Panama ranked 4th.

Costa Rica is one of the oldest democracies in Latin America and today marks the anniversary of Costa Rica's Independence from Spain in 1821. In traditional form, A Torch of Liberty was passed from Guatemala down to Costa Rica, the path that originally carried the word of freedom. Once inside Costa Rica, several torches were carried by school children throughout each region and finally making their way to Cartago, the old Capital City of Costa Rica. Another tradition is for school children to make lanterns (faroles), which replicate the lanterns the townspeople carried into the streets at night while talking about and celebrating Costa Rica's independence.

Jaco/Hermosa Scores Big with World Surfing Games

The 2009 International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games at Playa Hermosa and Jaco on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast last month holds the official distinction of being the most attended and covered sports event in Costa Rican history.

According to ISA, the eight-day tournament in early August drew more than 70,000 spectators to applaud surfers from 35 different countries competing for titles in the Men's and Women's Open and longboard competitions. ISA sais this was the biggest turnout ever recorded for a surfing event.

Hotels, restaurants and businesses in the Jaco and Playa Hermosa area reaped huged benefits in tourist dollars, taking in more than $2.5 million during the competition, according to businesses and hotels in the area. That amount is three times more than the average tourism sales total expected from an entire high season in Jaco.

More than 100 media outlets covered the even, including more than 50 international publications and radio stations. Coverage of the event was offered in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese.

"Today, the country of Costa Rica, thanks to results that exceeded our expectations for the event has shown that it is a country that surfs at the highest level and receives great support from fans across the country," said Jose Urena, president of the Surf Federation of Costa Rica and coach of the national team.

The Bite Was On!!!

Jon, Bruce, Sean and I blew off a Friday and went fishing out of Herradura Bay on Costa Rica's Central Pacific Coast.
What a day we had. Ten, yellow fin's (tuna) in the boat and watched the humpback whales (within 100 meters) breach - all within an hour on the water. We had four lines in and hit three different tri-fectas (three fish on at the same time) throughout the day. I also caught a good sized sea bass. We were fishing "The Rock" about 26 miles out. All in all, we landed 24 fish - lost about six others. Fresh sushi on the boat and again for dinner!
The fishing off Costa Rica's coast is world class! Next time, maybe we'll go for a blue marlin and sailfish. Hard decision, though as we love fresh fish on the barbecue (the marlin and sails are catch and release)! See You In Paradise!

World surfing games festivities in Hermosa Beach, Costa Rica begin today with surf events starting tomorrow, Saturday August 1st, 2009. The event represents the biggest surf event in the world with 34 national teams and over 200 competitors. Popular surfers include Australia's Mick Campbell, presently rated #13 in the world, California's Courtney conlogue, winner of last weeks US Open and Costa Rica's own Carlos Munoz, 2004 World Champion.

From CENPAC: SURFING GAMES COSTA RICA 2009 IN PLAYA HERMOSA. Countries from around the world will be sending their professional surf teams to represent during the event! Earlier next week, in Jaco, the park will be prepared for the Inaugural Ceremony which is to be held Friday July 31st. All of the participating teams will form a parade thru the main street of Jaco. The parade will leave the municipality around 10am and head towards the Central Park where all of the teams will be introduced and participate in a "Sharing of the Sands from around the World" ceremony. Over 80 volunteers coordinated by the Central Pacific Chamber of Commerce will be participating in the event. Both members of the local and national government as well as business representatives from around the region will be on hand to recognize the importance of surf tourism and welcome the participants: including big names like Sofia Mulanovich from Peru and Manuel Selman from Chile. Costa Rica is very nearly paradise, not just for holiday-makers lounging on its beaches, but for its citizens who are extremely satisfied with their lot and also have a tiny carbon footprint. The combination has earned the Central American country first place in a new Happy Planet Index (HPI) published on Monday. While leaders of the developed world attending G8 talks in Italy worry away at economic indicators like Gross Domestic Product (GDP), deflation and their implications for economic recovery, the second edition of the HPI lauds alternative standards that provide a new twist on the old adage that wealth does not buy happiness. Costa Rica stands out for the highest levels of reported life satisfaction, a long life expectancy of 78.5 years and because 99 percent of its energy comes from renewable sources. Latin American nations generally fare well, bagging nine of the 10 top spots, and Sub-Saharan Africa performs very badly, with Zimbabwe taking bottom place. It scores 16.6 out of 100, compared with Costa Rica's HPI total of 76.1, according to an advance copy of the report. Somewhere in between are the world's wealthiest economies. The United States placed 114th out of the 143 nations surveyed, with an HPI result of 30.7 and was found to be "greener and happier" 10 years ago than today — as were China and India, ranked respectively 20th and 35th, with scores of 57.1 and 53.

Economic Growth a Siren Song "Following the siren's song of economic growth has delivered only marginal benefits to the world's poorest while undermining the basis of their livelihoods," said Nic Marks of the New Economic Foundation, a London-based "think and do tank" that pursues "real economic well-being" and is the brains behind the HPI. "What's more, it hasn't notably improved the well-being of those who were already rich, or even provided economic stability." The aim, Marks said, was "to break the spell" and work towards "a high well-being, low-carbon economy before our high-consuming lifestyles plunge us into the chaos of irreversible climate change." To measure the efficiency with which countries convert the earth's finite resources into their citizens' well-being, the HPI takes three separate indicators — ecological footprint, life-satisfaction and life-expectancy — and then carries out complex calculations.

First published in 2006 as "a radical departure from our current obsession with GDP," the HPI's sums have been criticized for not taking sufficient account of issues such as political freedom, but the index has also found followers. Within two days of the launch of the first HPI, it was downloaded and read in 185 countries worldwide. Among those who have taken up the idea are David Cameron, leader of Britain's opposition Conservative political party, and the European Commission has launched a program "Beyond GDP" in pursuit of ways to measure progress better adapted to our age. I was having a tough day recently and was on my out to meet a client. As I walked by the community swimming pool I waved to a former client of mine who purchased a condo from me a couple of years ago. She was laying in a lounge chair at the pool and went on to thank me over and over again for selling her the condo.
